“It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage changes”-Charles Darwin. This theory still holds good for humans. We need to learn the art of living healthy with constant changes in our life style. A revolution is required for any change; the change for better health. There is a dire need of a holistic science to revolutionize the current life style of people. Ayurveda, meaning the knowledge of life, fills the gap between life and health.
Ayurveda : history and evolution
Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India dates back more than 5000 years. It is the oldest medical system in the world. It is a Vedic literature, a philosophy, a medical system, a holistic science, a healing tool and a way of life. Knowledge of Ayurveda was existed since the creation of the universe. The ancient medical scholars discovered the fundamentals of nature and its relation to all living beings and therefore, established the law of uniformity of nature. This eternal knowledge of Ayurveda was an oral tradition. Later, the great Ayurvedic physicians compiled the principles of Ayurveda and wrote them down as a formula in an ancient Indian language (Sanskrit). Ayurvedic knowledge was not only for the Indian continent but also for the whole world. Ayurveda has influenced many other sciences. In the15th century, European colonization in India proscribed the usage of traditional medicine and favoured the European medicine instead. Ayurveda lost its grace under this European power. However, after India’s independence, Ayurveda revived once again. At present, more than 70% of Indian population seek Ayurveda care. Moreover, it is gaining popularity globally due to its enormous healing benefits.

What Ayurveda offers
Ayurveda, the science of life, is a blessing to all living beings. Ayurveda not only focuses on human health but also the animal and plant kingdoms. Principles of Ayurveda are very simple, yet require a deep understanding. Ayurveda teaches us to reconnect ourselves to this universe. We begin to identify the relation between nature and all living beings that include humans too. We realise our individuality and and our unique role in the universe. Ayurveda has two particular objectives. The first one is protecting the health of the healthy and second is healing the diseased. Protection of health refers to prevention of illness and promotion of wellbeing. Ayurveda learnings focus to achieve the four meanings of humankind- performing duties (dharma), gathering tools for livelihood (artha), fulfilling desires (kama) and finally attaining emancipation (mokhsa). These are four efforts towards achieving an absolute bliss. The disease-free state is essential to accomplish these four means of life. Ayurveda is the only way to clear this obstacle and stay away from sickness.

Attaining a complete health
“Acharat Labhtey Hi Ayu”- this is a Sanskrit quotation from an Ayurveda textbook. This literally means that one can achieve a healthy life with proper food habits and activities. Here, life does not mean only increase in a life span, rather, it means living healthy for many years. Absence of illness is not complete Health. Health is achieved when your doshas (functional energies), Dhatu (Structural entities), Mala (excretory entities) and Agni (metabolic activities at cellular level) are balanced, when there is a clarity of mind, mastery over senses and then the soul experiences utmost happiness of bliss. This is a complete health.

Ayurveda has concluded that health is in an individual’s hand. None other than ourselves can heal us better. Ayurveda learnings equip us with tools of the art of wellness and mastery over our own body and mind. Ayurvedic life-style addresses all the health components in simple ways.
